This dramatic residence at the eponymous Cass Gilbert building blends the best qualities of loft and prewar styles. The elegant and spacious kitchen is open to the living room, which has plenty of space for both a large dining area and an open sitting area. The wide and long entry gallery gives a more formal feeling to the loft style living room, and is an excellent place for mixing furniture styles and displaying art. Air conditioning units have beautiful custom millwork enclosures with brass registers. polished nickel faucets and egg shaped doorknobs lend a prewar air. Large casement windows and eleven foot ceilings give each room excellent proportions. The layout is flexible, with several multipurpose rooms.
This National Historic Landmark Building was originally designed by Cass Gilbert, architect of the Woolworth Building on City Hall Park, the New York Life Building at Madison Square Park, the Federal Courthouse at Foley Square, and the United States Custom House at the foot of Broadway, and is named after him. The façade has two-tone terracotta panels and friezes depicting winged horses, roaring lions and racing chariots that were executed by the same company that worked with the architect on the Woolworth Building. Elevator doors have very detailed and well preserved brass images connoting the buildings earlier use for the fur industry. The building has a doorman, 11-foot- ceilings, casement style windows, an elegant lobby with restored original details and beige- toned subdued hallways. There are currently 45 condominium units and two retail spaces.
